The President of the People´s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, along with his wife Peng Liyuan, recently conducted a three-day visit to our country, which also coincided with the sixth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations of the agreements and cooperation between the two countries, re-established on June 1st of 2007. This is the second official visit by a Chinese President to Costa Rica during the last six years, besides being the only Central American country that holds this relationship with the Asian country.
The topics discussed during this last visit focused on trade, infrastructure, education, sports and energy matters. As a result of this visit, both nations signed nine agreements, the balance of which is reflected in an approximate of $ 500 million dollars disaggregated into loans, grants and partnerships.
The results obtained in the Agreements and Cooperation is through this partnership fostering transnational ties with the People´s Republic of China have been successful and are progressing rapidly, and now moving in the right direction. As the Foreign Minister of our country, Mr. Enrique Castillo, emphasized it is a “win-win” relation. It is important to highlight the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement between these two nations and the construction of Chinatown in the heart of San José. As part of these new opportunities, the future holds the possible creation of a “Special Economic Zone”, which seeks to promote large scale trade, investment and employment in our country.
